Label Text:This painting is from Edlund’s Homeland series, which is a project that involves painted adaptations of Ansel Adams photographs taken between 1942 and 1947 at or near the sites of the Japanese internment camp out West. He is interested in exploring the social realities that surround depictions of the landscape, but are often not discussed, much less depicted. In essence, the spiritual beauty that was the subject matter of monumental paintings of “pristine wilderness” areas, such as those painted in Northern California by Albert Bierstadt or photographed by Ansel Adams, is pitted against unsaid realities. Edlund merges the two in his reinvisioning of landscapes by canonized artists. This work was included in a 2003 exhibition at Laguna Art Museum, Whiteness, A Wayward Construction, which looked at whiteness as about ideology rather than biology.
Tyler Stallings curated it when he was chief curator there and before his arrival at UC Riverside in December 2006. Edlund is based in Boston, Massachusetts.
