Label Text:For Brakes, Cranks, Shifters, Duffy silk-screened cycling magazine covers onto scrap wood, creating a collection of paintings resembling a newsstand. In general, Duffy manipulates mass-produced consumer goods in his works to explore relationships between original and copy, high and low, familiar and strange, quixotic adventure and everyday life. He is based in Valencia, California where he spends his time examining the boundaries between suburbia and wilderness, often on a bike.

This work was included in the inaugural exhibition of the Culver Center of the Arts, when it opened in October 2010, and also Sweeney Art Gallery’s move into the Culver Center. The exhibition was Re:Cycle—Bike Culture in Southern California, which was on view from October 7 to December 31, 2010. Exploring the effects of bicycles on art and culture, Re:Cycle included thirty artists and collectives that used the bicycle as both a metaphor and a realization for restructuring the urban environment.
